There were 55 documented historic organs to be found in Malta (48) and Gozo (7). Not all are listed here since many are in such a severe dilapidated state that they are totally unplayable and, therefore, cannot be sampled. Major restoration work, in some cases a total reconstruction based on historic evidence and characteristics found in other organs built by the same builders, needs to be carried out. Restored organs are being listed as they are done. Digital reproduction of these organs will depend on availability of funds. It was not our intention to commercialize any of these organs but a price tag, albeit a modest one, has had to be introduced as from our second sampleset. Please help us with our work through donations so that we can speed up the process to make them available sooner and keep as many of them free! Extended digital versions are being created concomitantly so that a larger repertoire of music could be played on them.

The Balzan Platania Organ is available for free download (click).
The Fontana Gozo Organ is available (see here).

PERMISSION REFUSED BY CURATOR
Another organ that was in a rather poor state of conservation, and not included in this list, is that at St. Paul's Anglican Pro-Cathedral in Valletta. This instrument was sampled in August 2012 before it was completely dismantled in preparation for a complete re-build. Work is currently under way to produce a digital restoration where the original now no longer exists. The organ originated in Chester Cathedral in northwest England. The original was a one-manual instrument, built in 1684 by Bernard Smith, from material dating back to 1626, and is considered one of the earliest and most important to have survived from this period. It is said to have been played by Handel while en route to Dublin for the first performance of the Messiah. Since, the organ was upgraded with the addition of 2 more manuals and very likely an extension to the pedals. The virtual replica, based on this latest 3M+P instrument (Hill, Norman & Beard 1949), would certainly be a living memorial to this instrument and a tribute to its original builders (see here). This VPO is being created for GrandOrgue and is at an advanced stage.
